Purpose of the Job
The Artisan Aide provides support to qualified fitters and artisans in maintaining, repairing, and installing mechanical equipment in manufacturing operations. The role focuses on ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining a safe working environment in compliance with site-specific safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist fitters with maintenance and repair of plant equipment such as conveyors, pumps, gearboxes and motors
- Perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., lubrication, bolt tightening, cleaning components)
- Assist with installations, alignments, and equipment commissioning
- Maintain housekeeping standards in workshops and plant areas
- Complete basic checklists and assist with maintenance records
- Collections and delivery of spares, gas & diesel
- General painting in & around the plant
- Perform handyman duties where necessary
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, hazards, or faulty equipment
- Adhere to lockout procedures and safety protocols during maintenance work
- Support breakdown maintenance and planned preventative maintenance (PM) activities
- Handle and transport tools, equipment, and spare parts safely

- Attention to detail and problem awareness
- Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Physically fit and able to work in demanding conditions
- Reliability and strong work ethic
- Basic mechanical and technical aptitude
- Strong awareness of safety practices (e.g., lockout/tagout)
About You:
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Previous experience in mining, plant, or manufacturing environment (preferred)
- Basic knowledge of mechanical tools and workshop practices
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and standby when required
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Mechanical training (advantageous)
- Must be able to work at heights or in confined spaces
